Use a phone when the driver will keep Locate My Freight open. Use hardware when the tractor, trailer, or asset has to stay on the map even if the phone is in a bag, off, or with a different driver. Devices are sold separately from tracking credits.

Which device belongs on which asset

OBD-II sits in the truck. Oyster-class GPS sits on a trailer or other asset that may drop, wait in a yard, or move without the same phone. The desktop dashboard still shows location and ETA either way.

Drop-and-hook, yard dwell, team drivers, and trailers that sit over a weekend are hardware jobs. A denied location prompt on a phone cannot cover a trailer that left the lot.
