Use a phone when the driver will keep Locate My Freight open. Use hardware when the tractor, trailer, or asset has to stay on the map even if the phone is in a bag, off, or with a different driver. Devices are sold separately from tracking credits.
OBD-II sits in the truck. Oyster-class GPS sits on a trailer or other asset that may drop, wait in a yard, or move without the same phone. The desktop dashboard still shows location and ETA either way.
The driver app is the right tracker when the person hauling the load will grant location and keep data on. Hardware is the right tracker when the asset itself must report in.
