When to use the phone vs GPS hardware

Phone GPS versus OBD-II and trailer hardware

Use the Locate My Freight app when the driver will stay with the load, grant location, and keep the phone on a data connection. Use hardware when the tractor or trailer has to stay visible even if that phone is elsewhere.

  • Phone: fastest to start. No device to ship. Fails if location is denied, the battery dies, or the driver is not the person with the trailer.
  • OBD-II: plugs into the truck. Right choice when the tractor is what you must see, including after a driver change. Shop: OBDII GPS Tracker w/LMF.
  • Oyster GPS: sits on a trailer or asset. Right choice for drop-and-hook, yard dwell, and boxes that wait over a weekend. Shop: Oyster3 GPS Tracker w/LMF and Oyster3 Bluetooth GPS w/LMF.

You can run both: phone for the driver workflow (status and POD) and hardware for the asset. MacroPoint is a separate tracking provider some companies already use; this site sells Locate My Freight tracking, not that integration.
